The recording applet works fine in IE6 with Java 1.6 but does not seem to call the setTimer(s) and setStatus(s) when run in IE6 with Java 1.4. Is this not supported in Java 1.4 ?

In general, applet should work with JVM 1.4.
Do you use Mp3 or WAV recording applet? Which version of applet do you use?
You can see the version in Java console.
Can you give me the link to your test web page? I would like to check how applet works there.

I tried applet with Mozilla FireFox 3.5.4. It works. What version do you use?
It looks like FireFox problem with LiveConnect(java-js communications tool).
